Yutaka Sado
I can't believe that 10 years have passed so quickly. When the first PMF
was held, I was only 28 years old. Looking back upon the past 10 years, we
have experienced some changes: the size of the audiences has greatly
increased; the Arena has been added to the practice rooms of the Sapporo Art
Park; "Kitara" became our main concert hall, and the citizens of Sapporo
have given us stronger support. At the first PMF, all the members of the
staff were ambitious, but we did not know what to do and ran around in
circles. We are now in a favorable situation, and many new members have
joined us during these 10 years. I would like to convey the feelings I
experienced at the first PMF to those who joined us some years after the
establishment. At that time, I was studying under Maestro Bernstein and
felt nothing but joy at being able to follow him. Everyone was
enthusiastic, having noisy get-togethers, sometimes having quarrels and
sometimes crying for joy. I can vividly recall when the audiences gave us
standing ovations at concerts with Bernstein as the conductor. I remember
it as if it had happened yesterday.
I feel that the quality of the PMF Orchestra has been improved, with
musicians who perform much better. Members of the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have been offering
meticulous guidance as trainers, and made this program strong. At the first
PMF, even the schedule was not prepared sufficiently. Compared with that
time, many things have been improved.
Some young musicians, like me in the past, do not have confidence in
themselves. Lack of confidence prevents them from expressing themselves
even when they are interested in doing so. I would like to help them come
out of their shells. When I am not on a podium, I sincerely hope that I can
associate with my students as fellow members who create music together. We
have only four or five days to practice before giving a public performance.
Although we work together for such a short period, yet that leaves us with
many unforgettable memories. It is like a miracle to me. When dozens of
musicians play a melody in a concert, they sometimes combine well with each
other as if they themselves are a musical instrument. At such a time, it
does not matter who is the conductor. What musicians will remember are the
melodies they succeeded in playing in unison and how they sounded.
I myself learned a lot from the PMF. At this festival, internationally
renowned conductors introduce new styles every year. I have studied many
things from them. The PMF made me think about how to get along with
orchestra members and what a good concert is. A resident conductor is also
involved in the work behind the scenes, and I have learned how to organize
the festival with other staff members. I hope that I will continue to
participate in the PMF for a long time. The PMF's tenth anniversary also
means that it has been 10 years since I made a debut as a conductor. I hope
I can grow with the PMF in the coming decades.
